Is Ceramic Coating Worth It? What It Does and What It Doesn't

Ceramic coating is worth it if you want a car that stays glossy and cleans up fast. It is the wrong choice if what you want is protection from rock chips.

What a ceramic coating is

A ceramic coating is a liquid applied by hand to your car’s paint. It bonds with the clear coat and cures into a thin, hard layer that stays on the car through washing and weather. Wax sits on top of paint and wears away in weeks. A coating becomes part of the surface.

That layer is slick. Water beads and rolls off, taking dirt with it. Road film, brake dust and bugs have a harder time sticking, so the car looks clean longer and washes faster. It is part of our paint protection options, alongside film and wraps.

What you get

Deeper gloss

Paint looks richer and more reflective, and stays that way.

Easier washing

Dirt releases with less effort and less scrubbing.

Sun and stain resistance

Added defence against fading and against etching from bird droppings, sap and hard water.

No more waxing

The coating replaces the wax routine.

What it won't do

A coating will not stop rock chips, and it will not make your paint scratch-proof. It is far too thin to absorb an impact. It also does not mean you never wash the car again; it means washing is quicker and the result lasts.

If chips and scratches are your main worry, look at our paint protection film guide. Many owners use film on the front of the car and coat the rest.

How a coating is applied

Step 01

Inspection

We look at your paint under proper lighting and tell you what we see.

Step 02

Wash and decontamination

Everything bonded to the surface comes off, so the coating has clean paint to grip.

Step 03

Paint correction

Swirls and light scratches are polished out. A coating locks in whatever is underneath, so this step decides how the car will look.

Step 04

Coating and cure

The coating is applied panel by panel and left to cure. We’ll tell you how long to keep the car dry afterwards.

Who it suits

A ceramic coating makes the most sense if you:

  • keep your cars for years and want the finish to hold up
  • park outside, under sun or trees
  • like a clean car but not the hours it takes
  • have dark paint, where swirls and water spots show most
  • have just bought the car and want to protect the finish from day one

It makes less sense if the paint is failing, or if you are selling the car soon and do not want to invest in the finish.

Caring for a coated car

Wash it regularly by hand or touch-free, with a pH-neutral soap. Skip automatic brush washes, which scratch any finish. Rinse off bird droppings and sap when you see them. That is the whole routine.

Who does the work

A coating is only as good as the preparation under it. You can read about our approach on the about Younik Auto Detailing page, and see what is included in our ceramic coating service.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How long does a ceramic coating last?

It depends on the product and on how the car is washed and stored. Quality coatings are built to last for years. We'll tell you what to expect from the coating we recommend for your car.

Can I still use a car wash?

Touch-free washes are fine. Avoid ones with brushes.

Can a ceramic coating go over paint protection film?

Yes. It is a common combination.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint and the coating chosen. We quote after seeing the car.

Does my car need paint correction first?

Almost always, even when new. Most cars have light swirls from transport and dealer washing.
